Kannan, this is actually a song by Tyagaraja. In Telugu, it means “Can money provide happiness?” or something close.
Legend has it that the king of Thanjavur, on learning about Tyagaraja’s musical prowess, invited him to be his court musician. Tyagaraja, on seeing the gifts that accompanied the invitation, immediately composed a kriti asking Shri Rama if all this money and wealth amounted to anything at all.
You’ll notice that this is similar to what Subramania Bharati did to the king of Ettayapuram. The scene in the movie which captures this is a good one - Bharati is reading Shelley when the king’s entourage passes his street, but Bharati refuses to come down to pay obeisances.
