Do you have anything to say to someone who is very seriously considering uninstalling Windows Vista, possibly the worst ever operating system, and switching to Windows XP? Like a few words to wean me away from doing this…

What took you so long?
I would say hold on if you are just using it for normal work… I agree Vista isn’t where it should be… But there are many potentials for the future like WPF which much in the future lead to some really cool apps.. My annoyances were UAC security features which runs many processes at their lowest priveldge level and thereby requiring the user to provide explicit permissions for many tasks, IE7 not quite stable enough… and quite a bit of bugs in the Windows Explorer implementation.
However, having said that there are few things that were a good… Like side bar support, windows media center/media player, Most of them you can probably get from XP but still its easier with Vista. I think SP1 has hit beta and will release soon. So I hope it will fix some of the bugs. Being a developer using Vista is somewhat painful at the start since I had several problems with IDEs and debug tools and required installation of newer service packs.
I really liked ur post, thanx for sharing. Keep writing. I discovered a good site for bloggers check out this http://www.blogadda.com, you can submit your blog there, you can get more auidence.
Better hang to it till SP1 comes out in jan 08
Ubuntu rules!!
On a less geekier note, I found Vista to be horribly slow on my dad’s new laptop (Compaq, Centrino Duo, 512 MB RAM) and tried to uninstall it. It was the begining of a nightmare. First I did an FFR (fdisk, format, reinstall) Only, I couldnt get past F. Some amazing co-incidence FUBARed the motherboard just when i was trying to reinstall XP. I still think this has something to do with Vista. After a week, with a new motherboard in (thank the non-existent god for international warranties!), I finally installed XP, only to find that Compaq doesnt support XP on that laptop, meaning no drivers could be found. I hunted for drivers for almost 12 continuous hours (thank you caffeine, nicotine). Finally, after much googling and the support forum on Compaq and other websites, got everything up and running.
Couple of things to remember
1. Note down the details of each hardware component on your machine and hunt for drivers before you start the process.
2. Turn off SATA support in the BIOS. XP doesnt like this feature.

vista bada bejar.
Thanks for the comments. Actually, I let Vista be. Not because I have decided to wait for Microsoft’s patches and service packs. But because, as Scudie points out, it is not easy to switch back to XP. At least not in the middle of a semester.
The workaround is to strip Vista of all its RAM-gobbling, processor-intensive graphics, which is oh-so-fine with me.
So you have sold your soul to the evil M$.
did u check this out? http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2110596,00.asp
Dump Vista. Not worth it. Never going to be. Here’s my experience with Vista on my wife’s 512 MB compaq laptop.
vista windows explorer hang…
