Self-promotion and The Hindu
Did you read The Hindu dated May 21, 2007? It carried a detailed article on the back page about a certain Ms Vidya Ram who had topped the Columbia University’s School of Journalism. Fair enough. Congrats! But would anyone else aged 27, and from Chennai have made the news? If she weren’t the daughter of the newspaper’s editor?
Ms. Ram is the daughter of N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu, who is an alumnus of the Columbia University journalism school. She studied at Sishya, Chennai, Oxford University, and the London School of Economics before going to Columbia University. Ms. Ram spent a year teaching English in Harbin, China; interned at The Hindu group’s Frontline magazine in 2001-2002; and subsequently worked at the Hansard Society in London.
What next? Some grandchild passed second standard with flying colours?

Exactly, Vijay. I about this on my blog.
I dont see a problem as long as it is true. After all without parents’ help, in one way or the other, no one would be where they are
THE HINDU, at its lowest, probably. Or are they capable even worser acts?. I think this is some form of contagious disease. A memetic dragon acquired from links with the DMK perhaps. F***!
blood is thicker than ink, dear friend..
…. is it always like that???
Honestly, I do not see any problem of letting people know about Ms. Vidya Ram’s achievements as long as “The Hindu” also report periodically achievements of all other Indian students.
There was a time, even parents do not praise their children’s achievements ‘fearing the wrath of God” or in the name of humility. We have to change that attitude.
Thank God all the magazines and newspapers in the west such as India Tribune, Chicago; India West, California, Little India, Chicago are doing that.
All of them regularly give all the details of Indian students attaining prestigious scholarship awards as well as becoming valedictorians in schools and colleges. Kudos to them.
All of us should make it a point to appreciate and admire our children and grandchildren for their achievements. Days of keeping mum out of humility is dead.
You shud hav read the explanation that was given in the ombudsman column the next day. I have seen many articles about young student acheivers, both in India and abroad, in the HIndu. And this was just one of them. Since it was a genuine acheivement, i find nothing wrong in the reporting.
