“Vantha joli ennavo, athai paru pattane”. Though I am not a Tamilian, I know most of the Tamil alphabets and have some familiarity of the language. The sentence means (as I could understand) that whatever be the job one gets, one should accept it and do it well.

There is an ‘army’ of housekeeping boys in my office. Everyone carries a wiping cloth in his pocket. If we ask anyone among them to wipe a certain spot, he will certainly oblige. But there is one among them who does not need any direction. I have seen him doing certain things on his own.

There are a few classrooms in my office. The doors to the classrooms have glittering handles, display boards and peeping holes on them. This house-keeping guy ensures that all this are shining whenever he goes that way. Almost all the others will have to be told to do this and often under supervision if perfection is needed.

One day, we had to shift several computers, IP phones, etc. from one floor to the other. I called one house-keeping boy and it took a long time for shifting and connecting just one computer. It was then this boy, our hero, passed by. He voluntarily joined us. The things moved fast. Not merely fast, when we switched on all the computers, each one was working well, with all the network connectivity, etc. And IPLC phones too.

On yet another occasion, I was getting a number of old files shifted to the shredding area, in cartons. While two HK boys just dumped files in the cartons, our hero, who joined on his own, sorted the files, saved those boxfiles which were reusable, showed how to pack heavy cartons with the minimun brown tape, and trolleyed the cartons with ease, to the shredding area on the top floor.

Had he been a doctor or an engineer, he would still have been a top performer: I have always felt.

He accepts his job and does it perfectly.
