Hinduism’s newest reformer

Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita (Ch. 4, V. 8 ):

paritranaya sadhunam
vinasaya ca duskrtam
dharma-samsthapanarthaya
sambhavami yuge yuge

In order to deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I advent Myself millennium after millennium.

In the glorious traditions of Adi Shankara, Ramanuja, Madhvacharya, Raja Rammohan Roy, Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi comes Hinduism’s newest reformer — Sagarika Ghose.

Yes, Ms. Ghose, who ~~reads~~ presents news in CNN-IBN, lists down “pondering about Hinduism” as her chief hobby. This spurs her from time to time to present her views on Hinduism, how it has degenerated, how women are being looked down in Hinduism, and how the religion needs a new reformer. Especially, when she runs out of sensational news items, like these Mumbai blasts for example. (For how long can one keep exorcising the spirit of the city?)

And ever since the controversy that has “erupted” in Sabarimala, Ms. Ghose has risen as the unquestioned, undisputed champion of Hinduism. So here are a few questions which I would like to pose to her…

Ms. Ghose, what ails you?
It is common knowledge that Hindus do not take their religion very seriously. They don’t care as much about their religious sentiments being attacked. In effect, in a debate on religion, Hindus are soft targets. Is this why you choose to harp on Hinduism?
I dare you, Ma’am. Why don’t you launch an offensive on the oppression that women in other religions are forced to undergo? You talk about women being denied entry into one single temple. Why not talk about the equality of the genders, as practised in other religions?
You seem to buy too easily into the argument that Sabarimala is / was a Buddhist monastery. Why? In your blog, you quote Mr. Sanal Edamaruku of the Indian Rationalist Association. The reason these gentlemen give is that the area surrounding Sabarimala is littered with ancient Buddhist sites, hence this should also be one. There is a saying: “If you jump into a ring with 12 clowns, and start reading Shakespeare, onlookers will think of you as the thirteenth clown!” Ever come across it?
Assuming Mr. Edamaruku is correct, how can one possibly explain the Makara jyoti — the sacred light which appears unfailingly every Makara Shankaranti (January 14) amidst the hills opposite the shrine? Which Buddhist monastery in the world has recorded a similar event?
Can Mr. Edamaruku and his rational-thinking colleagues explain the flight of the Garuda which sails over the route to guard the cache of jewels that are transported from the palace of the Pandalam king to the shrine, again during Makara Shankaranti?
Why do you, Ms. Ghose, restrict the debate on religion to feminism and women’s liberation alone? In fact, you are moving the debate into the zone of reductio ad absurdum. You twist every single argument to give it a feminist angle, and thus kill it. “Religion. Hinduism. Sabarimala. Women not allowed. Inequality. Injustice. Male chauvinism. Let’s change tradition.” That is the progression of the debate. “Reduction to absurdity” was never used more cunningly!
You asked one of your invitees, a priest at the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, “Why are women not allowed inside the garbagriha of the temple?” I would like to draw your attention to the fact that your invitee responded, “But even the Shankaracharya of the Kanchi Mutt is not allowed into the garbagriha!” Is that reason enough to start a men’s liberation movement?
Why use such narrow arguments like “Do women pollute the shrine?” Maybe you are using the term, pollution, for want of a better word. But it does not convey the right meaning. My mom doesn’t allow me to loiter around in the house when I’m back from a haircut. I’m barred from the kitchen and the prayer room till I get a bath. Extending your now-famous stump line “Will Lord Ayyappa ever open his doors to women?”, I am going to ask my mom, “Will God ever open his doors to me when I haven’t bathed?” Fair logic, eh?
Are traditions meant only to be changed, Ms Ghose? Yes, they are, but only with strong reasons. That conservatives are averse to change, is a wrong opinion. Change, just for the sake of it, is what conservatives are against. The means are just as important. I ask you, Ms. Ghose, what do you wish to achieve by effecting change in Sabarimala? Let us assume that the doors of Lord Ayyappa are indeed opened to women. Will it ensure that women will not have any problems at all? Will all you feminists and pseudo-liberalists be satisfied?
If traditions are to be changed, why Ms. Ghose do you begin every newscast with a smile and a greeting? Let me try arguing like you do. “If you wish us ‘Good evening’, is that going to make our evening good? Hence the greeting is a waste of time. If I am in grief, it is going to enrage me. Why stick to values of the Victorian era?” I dare you again, Ms. Ghose, why don’t you try this?
There are so many burning issues to address. Your channel has launched a Light-a-Candle campaign to donate to the victims of the Mumbai blasts. Why don’t you take a hard stance on a hard issue? Say, the Israel-Lebanon conflict. Why not start a Light-a-Candle campaign to end this? Why just stay content with taking potshots at soft targets? Why don’t you give us some “real news”? As I noted a few days ago in these same pages, why don’t you just “leave my faith alone?”

What I really dont understand is the sudden urge to allow entry of women into Sabarimala. I mean it has been like that since time immemorial. Why this topic now? Because of Jayamala? Does that mean all those fighting for this hadnt heard about Sabarimala before this?

The Priest from Meenakshi Temple did even one better. When Ms.Ghose kept on questioning the rational of rituals and faiths and wanted them to be summarily changed, the Priest gave slap of an answer. It went on like this: ` Madam, all of what you say is fine. But we still call mother as mother and father as father only. Can they be called be otherwise just because you wish that way. Also men don’t deliver babies. The change you want is something as foolish as this only’

1 ) She is a hindu by birth, one talks of issues that one has knowledge about. All religions are unfair to women, but that doesn’t mean one shldn’t even talk abt hinduism. If she started talking abt Islam or Christianity, ppl would complain that this one talks without any knowledge.

6 ) Why not? what is wrong in looking ( “twisting”) at everything from feminist point of view? It is a feminist issue. Explain to me what other angle one can look at it from. A government org discriminating against women with social sanction. ( btw, I dont particularly care abt entering Sabri, but I can understand other women wanting to enter… )

7 ) Sankaracharya not allowed? Can you please elaborate here as in with links and such. Shankracharya and women not allowed but other men allowed? or is it only priests allowed, or nobody is allowed? Men’s liberation? from what? Men want to be liberated from a patriachal setup? ( feminists aren’t fighting the men, they are fighting the male attitude and the patriachal setup, if it were up to me, I would allow anyone who beleived)

She didnt begin the usage of the term “pollute”. Women ARE not allowed because of the so called “pollution”. my mother wont allow me into the kitche without bath/after haircut. I am a woman, we are equal there.

9) Change just for the sake of it? It is symbolic. there are women in many households that are segregated during period. families get social sanction because the temples do it. the doors of the temple opening up to women might be a symbolic change. There might be other problems ofcourse, but change never happened in one day.

11) Mumbai blasts are not real issues? I am from Mumbai and I find it offensive. Israel-Lebanon is a real issue, but the proximity factor doesn’t allow newsppl to play it up in a huge way. PLus, Indian Newschannels really dont cover Int news in a big way.

Feminism is imp. It is a voice that is not really given much space in Indian media. You might need a little bit of imagination and hell of a background in terms of reading up on feminism to understand what feminists are all about, not all feminists make sense, but we are in a post-moderninst era, take what you want. Do not dismiss ppl because you dont agree with their causes. She’s shrill and faffs way too mcuh, but atleast she is in a position to take it up, how many are able to do that?

When I talk about such subjects, I generally feel I am speaking to blockheads came over from DP, think yor post is well, typical.

@R: Thanks for calling me a blockhead. Wasn’t it Swami Vivekananda who said, “Show me your friends, and I’ll tell you who you are!” Notwithstanding the same, please to read the following.

1. Are religions unfair to women? Or is it society itself which is unfair? Also, do you mean being Hindu gives one the right to propagate stupidity in the name of debate?

6. The issue here is generic. One can understand it without wearing a feminist hat.

7. This was stated by the priest, Mr. MC Swamy, who was invited to the show. I cannot “prove” by facts and figures. What stupidity is this? I have stated clearly that this was stated by him. Maybe you should “read” what is written, and not what you assume.

8. The “pollution” angle is explained in a comment on Ms. Ghose’s blog. Please to read: “A pilgrim willing to undertake the Sabrimala pilgrimage has to observe 41 days of austerity in thoughts and action.This would mean that a woman who wants to observe this will face atleast one cycle of mensturation,now dont jump at me saying,is menturation dirty?No it is the gift of God that makes her the bearer of life. One biological aspect is that when female of any species is mensturating she tends to emit what is called as ’heat’ which in lower forms of life attracts the male towards her.In humans this is small to be felt.Nonetheless sacred places have an energy that is formed by sacred chantings, which helps maintain the sanctity of a shrine. It could then only be understood how this energy is going to be disturbed or not well directed when it is interfered with the energies emitted when a women is mensturating?”

Staying on, it is known that the tulsi plant is sensitive to a menstruating women. The plant is considered sacred in Hinduism, and tulsi leaves are an ingredient in every puja.

9. Why go for symbolic changes? Why don’t you get down to action? It is widely accepted in the western world that the Church is not an agent of change. Changes, rather, are propagated from society, and are accepted into religious practices finally. An analogy would be to say, “Let us educate only the older people in India. Child education can be taken up later.” Nice logic, ma’am. Blockhead, who?

10. This is a point of distinction between liberals and conservatives. Should change be evolutionary or revolutionary? You are suggesting, “Oh, I have nothing else to do. Let me change this.” Nice try. Bad luck.

11. “Mumbai blasts not real issues?” Did I say that? I mentioned that there are more real issues than Sabarimala. May I also ask you, R, why now? Were women allowed into Sabarimala last year? Where were you a year ago? A decade ago? And where was this champion(ess) of Hinduism? That is not to say that practices should not be questioned at all. Of course, we have to start somewhere. But these news channels are making money out of it. Out of targeting your faith and mine. They coat it with a feminist tint, to make it more appealing to you. I pray, don’t get weaned away.

I’m sure feminism is important. Women are important. They have been oppressed for long, and this should not be allowed to continue. Yes. Yes. Yes. I agree I’m not as well read on feminism as your exalted Highness seems to be. But may Your Highness ponder about what topics these neo-feminists (pseudo- is a better prefix) choose to address. Is Sabarimala the point to begin? I think not. There are more real, more immediate issues, more pressing, that the media should more readily take up.

Permit me to quote from your own blog post, The Secondary Citizen, dated Nov 20, 2005: “TN has acute water shortage. Common people have to buy water off the shelves. There are instances when the water that comes out of taps is muddy, all year long. All that is no reason to gripe. But when it comes to sex and a woman talking about it, they don’t think twice about protesting.”

The issue at hand is similar (and opposite). For one, it is not a “real” issue. Also, it has effectively been pushed from the realm of religion to sex. Sex sells, and news channels understand it. Sagarika Ghose doesn’t profit by getting the doors of Sabarimala open to you. In any case, these are people who take money from AMITY and run their ads 24 hours a day. You cannot expect better from them!

1) All religions are unfair to women. The majority in soceity still looks to religion for guidance. So yes, both are unfair.

Being a Hindu doesn’t mean one cannot criticise stupidity in their own religion, does a citizen support stupidity in her own country? . having said that there are tenets in all religions that are stupid.

Sagarika is sure to fail just as others who tried to dabble with established customs & quickly met their waterloo. Take the case of our all powerful Ms.J – ex CM of TN. She tried to stop animal sacrifice in TN & was blanked out in the 2004 LS Elections. Even Courts did not come to her rescue by holding that Govt., has no right at all to interefere with customs and practices. Though she withdrew the Legislation later, still she lost power in the 2006 elections. I do not agree with animal sacfice & so I dont do that. But I have no right to sermonise others to change. Even Menaka Gandhi does not do that in TN – being an intelligent politician herself. It is time that Rajdeep counsels Sagarika to put an end to the nonsense going on in CNN-IBN. Doubt if he will do – being a very aggressive journalist who believes in being demonstrative at the drop of the hat.

our culture has a great role for ladies in the society,they have to help the men to change thier attitudes towards women.is debating about sbarimala neccassary?.what is
change ?taking huge money(in films)to expose the body?now tell me ,is this subject has no effect on teenage boys, who are not so efficient to control their feelings(harmones effect).Is it not the responsibility of their parents to control them ? or just they have to punish him hardly for the thing he did against feminiscm.

in our hindu society much protection(regarding control of their movements with boys), i.e from parents and grand parents ,is there for women in the form of some regulations.so now tell me who needs the deeksha of sri swamy.think just like moms or sisters not just like opponents.you are different from the foriegn women,we love you at most.we have heart full honour towards you please keep it as it is.
if you recieve me optimisticly ,i have a answer for the question “why women are not allowed to visit sabarimala”.

I strongly feel that the said sagarika ghosh is a convert christian along with her husband rajdeep sardesai,both of them are cheating the majority hindu indians by presenting and writing as though a diktat from the church,please with pseudo hindu names dont take us for a ride.no amount of modi bashing will turn the brave gujarathis away from their endevour to make gujarat a model state in india

In fact these english speaking countries consider these english speakingIndians as coolies-which in fact they are.And pakistanies have refused themselves to be relegated to the status of coolies.Because they have self respect which these english media peoples(in India) have not got.Ten years ago the president of Ficci,an industry organisation and darling of Indian english media had demanded of Govt. of Indiato reduce armed forces(at height of kashmir and Punjab insurrection) and give free reign to foreign firms.And that sort of demand became a reality when Manmohan singh became
finance minister and narsingh Rao succemed to american pressure to not
only not test atom bomb but also pack up Agni missiles programmes. All the things that a
foreign enemy country would have demanded and america di demand. It is no surprise .Because
Manmohan singh, narsingh rao and all english media (who supported that illegal minority govt.with out mandate to bring fundamental change in India’s self reliability)-asll these creaures were and will

Many people in India,under influence of english medium media and

who are the aryans and and hindus?

Aryas(correctly called rather than aryans) are,were,and will remain in India. They might have migrated to other places sometime but the source of Aryan race,culture and civilization was, is and will remain India. There is an overwhelming evidence in support of this. She is able to stir one’s conscience on the polarization of stronger sect over the weaker one or vice versa as the case may be. It needs a good mind to pen down in a hushed manner the flaws prevalent in our present day society.

Ultimately Sagarika Ghose is never taken astray from the prime motive of effectively passing on the real facts and leaving it upto every individual to interpret and understand it according to one’s genuine awareness of inner conscience and inquisitive mind that seeks the true facts.

And ever since the controversy that has “erupted” in Sabarimala, Ms. Ghose has risen as the unquestioned, undisputed champion of Hinduism, which only means more tolerance, humanity and non-violent meditation to uplift the entire human race from deep awareness of their inner self consciousness, divinity as well as the devilness of thoughts that keep conflicting within us all at one time or the other, how to overcome the evil temptations and exercise restraint and control of such distracting senses to reach a higher altitude of simple living and high thinking.

Assuming Mr. Edamaruku is correct, how can one possibly explain the Makara jyoti — the sacred light which appears unfailingly every Makara Shankaranti (January 14) amidst the hills opposite the shrine? Which Buddhist monastery in the world has recorded a similar event?

Answer: This has been already explained several times. Makara jyithis is a phenomenon created by Travancore Dewasom board to get the devotees to the Sabarimala Shrine . The above statement already endorsed by 2 former Chief Ministers of Kerala; Mr.E.K.Nayanar and Mr.K.Karunakaran. photographic evidence is there to prove this point. The fake jyithi is appearing year after year with the help of Kerala State Electricity broad officials , Forest guards and Kerala Police. Several memebers of the staff also admitted this fact that the Sabarimala Makara jyoti is a setup with the help of several government departments.

Question 6:
Can Mr. Edamaruku and his rational-thinking colleagues explain the flight of the Garuda which sails over the route to guard the cache of jewels that are transported from the palace of the Pandalam king to the shrine, again during Makara Shankaranti?

Sabarimala is a thick forest and Garuda is a very common bird seen there. There is nothing to awe about this.

ANSWERS TO some QUESTIONS on “makara villakku”:-
(1) Why was the set up done only in 1981 & 1986?
Before that period there were celebrations held by tribal people every year on the Makara samkranthi day.Once the tribals moved away from that place, then so called “miracle” stopped and the revenue of sabarimala went down. So to get it moving again the state decided to start it again using the help of 3 state departments
(1) Kerala state electricity Board (2) Police Department (3) Dewasom Board

(2) Is the Jyothi state-managed every year?
yes it is a managed event to fool people sponsored by the 3 departments of the Kerala Government.

(3)The devotees (including me) have been witnessing the Makara Jyothi for ages (I was told by my elders that during their days the Jyothi used to be there for even 5 to 10 minutes) and has it been ‘managed’ since then?

Yes you are right, In the past, this “miracle” was for 5 to 10 minutes, because the tribal people took that much time to finish their pooja at Ponnambalamedu. Now as there were no tribal settlements there and the “makara jyothy” is run by Kerala Government employees, they can’t hold that Aluminium vessel for 5 to 10 minutes as the vessel heats up very fast.

(4)If it is set up on a concrete platform, how come it moves on air?

It moves on air because, the man who is showing the vilakku ( normally an employee of KSEB ) uses a large Aluminum Vessel and moves it around . Concrete platform is there so that the person can climb on that to show the “makara vilakku”

(5)If the alleged ’set up’ is true, why have the governments involved in such a ‘farce’ to fool the devotees?

Government is run by Politicians and they are always behind votes. So they dont want to put an end to their vote banks.
