- Pagal Nilavu – no idea
- Nayagan was set in Bombay, so no chance
- Anjali was set in Chennai
- Roja, in Kashmir, so might have been shot in Shimla, Manali, or even Ooty
- Dalapathi, somewhere in South India, methinks Mysore
- Agni Nakshatram, no
- Mouna Raagam, Chennai and Delhi
- Bombay – duh!
- Thiruda Thiruda, probably not
- Iruvar, probably not
- Uyire, somewhere in North India, maybe along the border, seems like the only doubtful choice
- Alaipayuthey, no, don’t think so
- Ayutha Ezhuthu, no
Kannathil Muthamittaal, then, seems like the only movie which has been set outside India, and that too, because the story warrants it – it is the tale of an adopted child, whose biological mother fights for the Tamils of Sri Lanka. Even this movie could have been shot in some Lanka-like region in Tamil Nadu or Kerala. In none of the movies listed above could we think of even a song which was shot “in phoren”. Mani is one of India’s best directors and yet the above statistic! Very, very surprising!
If you know anything to the contrary, dear reader, please let me know – I would be glad to stand corrected.
P.S.: The list above does not consider movies produced by Mani. I think the Rayile rayile song in Five Star was shot in Europe.

dude mani shot kannathil… in pondy not in lanka.. d whole lanka thing was shot in lanka n u r rite mani is a gr8 director
Yup as above. Shady guy shoots in Pondy, and doesn’t really bother to correct people when they assume it’s shot in Sri Lanka. He’s the best, just the same.
And thanks for dropping by – do feel free to email me at my new address!
It’s good to know that there are some movie makers who still think phoren locales are alll the important
hi vk
yeah , mani is one of those desi directors- no swiss or london!
anyways , good statistics!

Thanks for enlightening about the Lanka-Pondy thingie.. Thalaivare, add Idhayathai Thirudathey also to ur list.. Guess that sums up Mani’s Tamil movies..
And yeah, I’m the most honorable friend who broached this off-the-beat topic with VK
!!
yep, that five star rayile was an abherration in the movie, didn’t fit at all. They should have shot it locally.
Idhaya kovil and a dubbed Nagarjuna movie ( think Geethanjali) are also indigenous. Mani is one who gives life to his characters he sketch and look for beauty in our own locales shot thro brilliant camera work rather than go 2 phoren places
nice thinking..never thought about it
It is true that Mani hasn’t gone to foreign locations except for KM (the scenes where the trio land up in Lanka)
And one minor correction…Nayagan was COMPLETELY shot in Chennai…Thanks to the extremely delicate work of Thotta tharani in recreating the Bombay locales in Chennai!
Some of the Lanka scenes in KM, were shot in Poonamalle
hi pal
me toooo a great fan of mani sir.you got to appreciate his emagination. The impact he had on me in his movie “anjali” is beyond words.i felt he deserved something better than an OSCAR for his capacity in getting that movie done by a child artist.
what you feel bout it?
if atall there is anyother movie of same standard and intensity plzzzzzz get it to my notice on my above mail ID with the subject”for manis fans”
Just wantd to put forth my point…Mani’s movies till Roja created greatre sensation and were bigger hits compared to aytha ezhthu,Kannathil muthamittal, thiruda thiruda, iruvar etc…the reason according to me is it had ilayaraja and pcsreeram in it…re-rescording is one area which can bring any mediocre film to above average of any actor/director…Im not saying that rahman is nt capable..but he is not able to create that magic..wish there is one film some time in future which has the intensity of kannathikmuthamitaal etc and raja scoring the bg…
Madhavan, I am a big time fan of Ilaiyaraja, but I think your comment is grossly one-sided. I cannot think of anyone, not even Rahman himself, to have come up with something better than what he did in Alaipaayuthey.
As for re-recording, I think Roja and Bombay were intense and engaging, and Kannathil Muthamittaal outstanding. Agreed that the BGM and re-rec in Nayakan is unparalleled, but that does not diminish Rahman’s contributions to Mani Ratnam’s movies.
The song Mayya Mayya from Guru was shot in Turkey. We can see Hagia sophia in mnay shots. Difficult to erect a set for THAT.
