Vijay’s movies can be classified into three categories: “no good”, “absolutely stupid” or “both the above”. No actor in the who world - even the whole universe - can surpass him at run-of-the-mill fare. In fact, the term “run-of-the-mill” has become so run-of-the-mill when applied to his movies. This is truly unfortunate because Vijay, despite being a really good actor, has decided that the storyline and performances should necessarily be relegated to oblivion in all his movies.His latest movie, Sivakasi, releases today with no big expectations - not from me, at least. After all, the story should be “penniless chap - rich heroine, whose father is a villain - or some rowdy - some sentiment, sister, mother, brother, father - penniless chap kills three million baddies - THE END”
Kumaran, who has already seen the movie, confirms my suspicions. His review here is none too enthusing.

I don’t deny that Vijay’s movies are crowd-pullers, and do really good business. But that shouldn’t deflect us from the fact that his movies are miserable on all other fronts.

I do acept his movie doesnt have enuf contents. But remember, the problem he faces is similar to rajni’s. He has his own fans who are very demanding and they want to see their star always as a super-hero. This is more than anything for him and he has to choose such roles. After all, people make movies to earn. Whosoever is providing that wins. Even though I enjoy watching very good quality films (some Kamal-Vikram movies), I dont expect the film-makers to be ‘altruistic’. The majority of people go to watch movies to get entertained and not to get some enlightenment. To enjoy the time spent in a movie hall, spending some bucks, Vijay’s movies dont disappoint many.

All this talk about entertainment is quite base. What kinda entertainment can a guy who kills a few hundred people every movie provide?
I don’t expect film-makers to be altruists. But they can at least start thinking. I’m sure that movies like Kaakha Kaakha, Autograph and Kaadhal have provided Kollywood with a critical mass which with it can move from making movies just for the masses.
Even after that, Vijay delivers dialogues like “Sivakasi pattaasu pannra edam. Naan pattaasu vedikkira edam.” What kinda stupidity is that?
I’ll tell you what Vijay’s next few movies will be. Krishnagiri, in which he is a plumber of the same name; Dindigul, in which he is a locksmith of the same name; Salem, in which he is a mango, er… mango seller, of the same name; Bangalore etc…
All these will have the same story. A plumber who kills 200 people who lead-poisoned a village. A locksmith who kills 300 people who…
Tell me which of Vijay’s movies will you rate in the top 10 or 15 Tamil movies you’ve seen. That gives you the importance of an actor.

Rajni and Vijay are the only 2 heroes who can fight with Telugu and Hindi heroes in terms of remuneration or blockbusters….

Comparing Vijay with Rajni isn’t very wise because Rajnikanth’s movies are quite different from each other, the only constants being the punch dialogue and such other stuff.
Secondly, image is an imaginary concept. Don’t tell me that Kamal Hassan or Vikram have a lesser “image” than our man. Aren’t Kamal’s movies different from each other? Does Tom Hanks suffer an image crisis? I’m sure they are both better actors than Vijay, and have more following too.
Vijay lurks behind the constant fear that if he tries something different, he would lose his “position”. That makes him a loser. L-O-S-E-R!

Anyhow, Continuing our debate on Vijay movies… Ghilli was too good, but the fact remains that it was a telugu remake… And, yes, he did try to come out with different roles but hasn’t been able to try out like Surya. So, to sustain his masses (and to extend his popularity to the new breed of upcoming film-goers) he has to do ’some’ role. and a diwali release could be in tandem with a movie on Sivakasi!! hmmm yeah, the fact remains that people may get pissed off with his movies if he continues such movies.. but given our tamil makkal, we donno what may happen!!!
